Swine Backyard database.
« on: November 13, 2007, 09:45:40 AM »
Greetings to all!

I want to propose a project called "Swine backyard database"

Where as participant will be asked to share his/her data relating to his farm:

Data means number of sow, piglet, vaccine used, average weight of animal etc.
This data would then be use to evaluate the current situation, problems and possible adjustment that a swine backyard raiser could do to his farm.

This project would be a year long project.

I will be making a form that you will update time to time and will be emailed back to me for evaluation and at the end of the year (December 2008) we will then published here the result of our study.

The government has this kind of project but they are based on large commercial farm.

What i like to target is the backyard raiser because there is a big difference between a commercial farm and backyard in terms of economics. Although there will be no assurance that we can resolved something or we will benefit from it. I do think that it is better than doing nothing at all.

Hope for your reply.

Thank you.

Doc, sounds like a good idea, too long in the coming, information is golden.
Is this for THE INDEPENDANT HOG PRODUCERS,backyard production to my knowledge is less than 20 sows,(1-20) sows,20-50 small commercial,50-200 medium commercial.etc.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT:           mikey

that's a very good project you will have just like the ones we are monitoring in a commercial scale..hope that you can get as much information and got some good results coming from the backyard raisers...maybe you could collaborate your proejct to the PSIRDFI-Phil. Swine Industry REsearch and Dev't Corp. as to how to get those information from backyard raisers considering most of our backyard raiser seldom record the performance of their pigs....

Actually backyard now a days are becoming more record conscious the problem is that they are hesitant to share their data. As of now i don't have any data yet to study. Maybe in the coming years i could collaborate this with my former bosses.

we planned that project 3 years ago but until now it can't materialize due to the limited data to be gathered on a backyard scale...if you know backyard farms doing recording of their production maybe we could collaborate with the foundation and work things out so that production performance on a backyard level can be made....

I'm not in the field anymore so the chance that i can go back to my old customers is not that feasible anymore.

I think the only group that could materialize this kind of project is those who are involved in the feed business for most of the time they have customers that they monitor in a regular basis like what i used to do in the field.

Purina/Cargill is one of the feed companies in the country that is starting to have a set of records for the backyard...we've been contacted by them since last year to conduct seminars and train backyard swine raisers on proper recording...

Yeah, this kind of data is sacred to feed company.  But surely beneficial to all if they will share it.
