Starting a Hog farm or Poultry farm, help pls.

Doc. Nemo and for those expert around, My family decided to move back to the philippines this year so I'm looking for business that can generate income. For now I'm in serious consideration of STARTING a HOG/SWINE/PIGGERY,if funds will allow I also wanted to start a poultry. My problem is, I'm new to this business. I kind a gathered some important information from this forum but it seems not enough.
My biggest problem right now is the marketing since I have no contact as yet, I'm also considering about contract grower but I guess I need to be there (PI) to handle the application part.
Now, my last question is your honest opinion, would it be wise to start this kind business? let say if I have P3,000,000.00 in my pocket right now. To add my land area is 7 Hectars and lots of BAMBOOS.
Thank you

Doc. Nemo, do you know a contractor or company that installs automatic feeder and waterer around ILOILO area. Or supplier of the equipment so I could just install it myself.

Marketing is the usual problem in the piggery business. To find biyahero's or middleman go to the palengke/market near to your place and ask around. Or you could try the slaughter house.
If your place is near a progressive city or megacities then market would not be a big problem.
Personally i do believe swine business is a profitable business. The only problem if you want to start it would take atleast 5 months to a year before you can generate some money.
Just start small and let the first six month be your learning period. afterwards then go fullblast with your business.
If you want poultry raising i would suggest go for contract growing. Poultry market is very unstable. Atleast if you are in a contract growing system you are not the one who look for a buyer.
You do not need to look for a company to build you an automatic feeder o waterer. Unless you will build a farm that in similar to the other country. Although per my opinion it is not applicable in the philippines especially if you will just start in this business.
Automatik feeder can be bought at a prince range of maybe 4t-7t. and automatik waterer can be installed by ordinary plumber. You just need to buy a nipple drinker or ball type drinker for pigs. This cost around 100- 500 pesos.
Try to go the gallery section there are picture there about feeder.

Doc. Nemo thanks a lot for the tip. I have'nt look at the gallery yet. I guess I would have to read all the posting first before placing my question for redundancy.

Redundancy is allowed.
Most people here are busy that they have limited time to look for answers. So they just post for a question.
Just try to put it on proper topics.
So, far topics are organized naman.

Sara better to start off small,or have a good job with lots of overtime, hogs eat their weight in gold, bio security is another, only those who need to at the farm should be allowed around the stock,or risk the chance of bringing in outside deseases, wash hands and feet all the time when handling the stock and their feed, security is another problem, barb wire with lights and have dogs for a early warning system.
buy a hog raising book from Doc. Nemo, explains alot and get to know how to do the 3 way breeding program. Good Luck With Your Venture

Mikey, I'm not sure what's going on. there might be an underground movement going on or Filipinos just eat to much PORK.
Mikey, just to ask if you don't mind me asking, what's your opinion about contract grower?. If I have to start my own piggery what should I consider first,Breeding or Fattening?lastly do you have any pictures of your building design that includes the inclosures/forrowing cage and the cages as a whole.Pardon me of my piggery language because I'm still trying to familiarize them.(boar, gilt, forrow, sow etc). Thanks
Robbie

The philippine is a pork loving country. Most of our produce are being consumed here. Just imagine the philippines has about 80 million people who eat pork.
We cannot export yet to other country because our pork is much expensive compared to other country.
But there are now companies that are trying to go global. Hopefully they will open the doors for the export of hogs.

Robbie,ok Doc. Nemo explained it well, but it would be good for the Philippines to start exporting.China has its eyes open to this idea, exporting
The question about breeding or fattening,I am not the one to ask, they both have good points and bad points,With us, its a little of both, boy piglets get their family jewels removed,if people know you have piglets they may ask you not to operate on a male they wish to buy,so this will become a breeder (boar) male or a young unbred female is known as a gilt.
this is a little of both.Sorry have no pictures I can send over the net,I have lots of still shots, the barns were built in sections,28 feet wide by 32 feet long, there are 4 ,8 by 8 cement pens on each side ( 8 cement pens in total ) with 2 mothers in each pen, pushed against the cement walls, the space in the middle works as a farrowing area, the mother pig can lay down and still nurse her babies, you have to make sure the other mother will farrow later, after these are weaned, the same on the other side,so you have 16 sows plus 6 sows in the centre divided by metal between to large water tanks,so 22 in total in a 28 by 32,from the outside one cannot see the hogs because of the cement blocks, door way at each end. We have a 2 tier metal roof, enclosed with bamboo, looks like a house, the cost is 250,000.00 pesos per section times 3 sections,or I forgot, then you need 2 32 feet long metal dividers for the front of the pens, construction costs raise daily, cement.metal etc.Mr Hog has a different style of barn, maybe simplier to construct with less hassle,I wanted ours to look more Canadian.
hope this maybe of some help to you. Good Day mikey
