We now await for the arrivals of a crossing, backcross breeding of some snubian does back to their saanen sire.We have retained enough daughters to end this saanen line.It is hoped with this crossing we might expect to produce some very nice F2-75% saanens or we might expect many problems. What we expect to lose with hybrid vigor we will make up with consistency. This tight breeding,in- breeding, should never be taken lightly. In this case,we are ending this sannen line and will look for another saanen line to continue with our future breeding plans of this grading up.

The early research and developement at AGF has shown that the saanen line is by all accounts the best dairy line to begin any grading up programs. The saanen is a great starting point and as other Asian countries have reported.Local graded up in country born are showing better results over imported.Again the hybrid vigor is showing signs that adapting to ones climate and management is easier with less problems over purebred imports that have been bred to adapt to the climate it was bred in.

Depending on outcome. It is hoped we will be able to provide a buck from this tight breeding to allow other small goat raisers the opportunity to use a better buck to help them get started with grading up their herd/s in this part of the rural countryside.True,it will only be a F2-75% graded up saanen buck, many areas in some of the more remote provinces do not even have this of today. It is this writers opinion, distance between the haves and the have nots is growing. Some areas of the country are still waiting for help, any help.

Not speaking for the whole country and the goat industry as a whole but this producer is moving ahead with our own plans to set a new and workable breed standard,The Philippine Standard for graded up.This standard,F3-87% graded ups could be a workable solutaion for bucks in some areas of the rural countryside. Its a small start and should be much more cost effective. The Govt. could buy local.

Mustang Sally is in private talks to buy an isalnd born American Breed Standard over Purebred Breed Standard Saanen bucking who's dam is out of the Rocky Run famous milking lines located in the Pacific Northwest. It is hoped this line will cross/blend well inot our Snubian line. The dam is from a high powered line but the sire is from a less known line.We have tracked all the lineages through the ADGA and feel this line will bring value into our future breeding plans.Rocky Run lines, helped to build the Caprikon line.

Four out of every five registered Saanen's through the ADGA are classed as American over Purebreds.People like Steven Schack and Ray Viena were the leaders of their time and responsible for American over purebreeds.

The country has enjoed many years of breeding today and not any real news coming in that purebred dairy goats are out performing crosses of dairy goats.Dairy news is rather slow coming forward. What is better understood today from early importations is adaption to environment/climate.Some have observered that hybrid vigor plays an important role in adjusting and hybrid vigor is stronger in first generation crossings over breeding purebred to purebred of the same breed.

Would appear that Alaminos is by far the most adavanced dairy operation and continues to do so.Their work with Sannens as a breed for Philippine Dairy was a long shot that paid off big time.Sometimes it pays to think outside the box and follow your beliefs.

I think for anyone entering dairy today, production is what is expected and most sought after for milking.Sometimes the gains for production may take away from conformation. Some want pretty looking goats but others feel that since they are not show goats and their milk production is their worth, why not. Some want both, production and pretty looking goats in one package.People breed for what goals they set for their type of operation.

Due to not having goats evaluated and scored, farms with records have to guess with the information at hand as to which does to be bred to which buck/s.Type evaluations is a final score given to goats that have its strenghts and weaknesses scored and graphed and with its final score.

Mustang Sally Farm is pleased with the purchase of an island born Sannen buckling out of a USA powerhouse Rocky Run Sannen line. This buckling on his dams side is all Rocky Run but on his sires side somewhat weaker but even on his sires side, known for production, milk. We still hold onto the belief that outcrossing American onto island born Australian lines should help to produce better milking goats under a tropical setting.Ability to adapt to climate first followed by milk production as long as the diet needs of goats can be met.I feel at this time that diet/s is still a work progress for many while others have met the challenge,Alaminos has solved many of their diet needs and have found success with their own pellet production.Experimenting is still needed with data collection to help others thinking about entering the business of goat farming.

We we told one cannot confine goats without dead goats. The Philippines proved this wrong.Goats can be raised confined with adapting management practices.Over the last 6-8 months we have experimented with feedlot conditions for raising meat goats at Mustang Sally on rice hull flooring. This will work but not without some problems.First, worm loads are higher requiring more deworming practices, cost more, hooves cannot wear down due to flooring and their hair coats are much dirtier, more unthrifity looking. Our plan for the next 2 weeks is to begin the pouring of cement floorings for each pen of 15 x 40 and record changes in goat health, worm loads, hooves and general appearances, cleaner hair coats. The problem with people from the west is the fact they raise livestocks on larger land holdings while those of us in the Philippines must think outside the box and experiment more to find out what will work and what will not.

We will begin  to ear tag all our goats by colour, different breeds will have different colours with their numbers and plan to ear tattoo. This is in support of a nation wide identification goat program allowing the trace from farm to markets. In the event of a major health outbreak program the Govt. will have the much needed information to isolate the farm in question and act.Gives customers the sense of assurances of quality products entering the marketplace.

I was in Alberta Canada for the last 2 months with some farms selling meat goats right from their farms over selling through sale barns.Better live prices from the farm over the marketplace at the sales barns.Still a slow industry but there is movement for new people to enter and supply meat and dairy products. The demand is there but not the supply. The other problems people were telling me was the fact that goats are hard on fences and another reason why people were not interested in this livestock.

Many have already left sheep farming due to low pricing but some were returning to sheep as prices have come up some.

In the beginning I thought that the sire to our Sannen buckling was a weak link while on his dams side was top of the game with Rocky Run in the lineage. After much researching and talking with others I have found that WMV Tribesman has many daughters in USA herds that have gone on to become winners. This gives us a much better understanding of what we can expect once we start using him in our graded up breeding program using experimential Sannen cross/hybrid does.Appeared to us many years ago that cross/hybrids seem to adapt better to climate over many of the purebreds and slowly grading up allows us to take advantage of adapting to change and using the very best purebred buck/s for production with lactation. This new bloodline is known for production and production is where this phrase will lead us into.Large farms with the known breeders have the luxury of the numbers game.Having more than one bloodline to experiment with is only a matter of time before one or more bloodlines hits the right combination and something of outstanding value shows up while for us smaller operations having the ability to locate and buy the right bloodlines is more so of a gamble. The end is the same for both, produce something of outstanding value, generation to generation.

Powerhouse of genetics behind this buckling lineage.

Another year here and another year to follow.Dairy milk production still seems to be front and centre over meat goats but any dairy goats not capable s milking goats can be bred or turned into meat goats. The main stumbling block I see with dairy goats at this time is still the question of consistency from generation to generation.Known breeders with milking goats in the top ten with the ADGA have consistency for production generation after generation. This is only a matter of time and with selective breeding to supply quality breeding does with known consistency and with documented data showing relatives as to same.Producers looking for quality stocks will want data to prove or disprove milking abilities.Serious producers do not want to waste their time on the word of the breeder that he/she breeds milking goats but has no known records to back any claim.Any goat that kids, milks but its the quantity that counts providing the diet meets the output.Any dairy goat that costs the producer more to feed than milk given, will be out of business in short order.

Noah Goddard of Goddard Farm out of Kansas,USA, a well known American Nubian breeder with consistent top ten milking does, year in and year out has been working behind the scene in the Philippines with consulting advice and also private export/imports to help get the Philippine dairy industry up and going.Noah has stated, with the right dairy buck,Philippines could see real promise in 3 generations for dairy.Knowing which bloodlines would have the best chances for success comes from those who are in the top ten year in and year out and with milk records to prove so.These breeding stocks do not come by cheap as their demand sets their worth.

I guess the industry is still in the business of breeding while fattening has taken a back seat.Dairy is front and centre with many breeding for dairy.Having a selection of stocks to choose from is great but its hard to judge the milkability without PTAs and PTIs and knowing reliability for any bucks.Breeding in itself is always a gamble and if the goat is not having its nutritional needs met then it cannot produce well enough to pay for its upkeep.I think some of the reasons for poor perform reported by some is just a case of not meeting the needs of the goat.To adapt, does must settle, breed and kid and if she does this then she is adapting to change, but the old saying goes, your goats will only be as good as the food they are eating.Forages is still a learning game as goats imported from America have been designed to perform on hay and alfalfa which goats do not eat in the tropics.Finding something to replace hay/alfalfa is still a work in progress but some have solved this problem with forages they are growing like indigo and a few others.Interesting to follow the dairy industry as it grows but help to the rural countryside is slow in coming.

A doe rated as a *8 should in fact produce daughters that milk 8lbs over the average and the more bucks in herds, makes for more accurate reliability. Those who have imported on their own have the information at hand to make decisions as to which goat to breed to which goat.Due to our cross/hybrid breeding program we see a lot less consistency but greater hybrid vigor which we feel is the beginning for adapting to change. The purist will always favor the purebreeds over crosses but the mavericks will favor the crosses over the purebreeds or breed both.

What is the state of meat goat production in country as of today? Is there a meat goat industry? These are good questions to be asking. One reason for the lack of information is the social media sites where anyone can open their own facebook and decide not to belong to a site of like minded people where information can be shared by all, good, bad or in the middle.Should anyone or farm large enough with enough followers and they decide to move away from the meat side and enter the dairy side then you have those who will follow suit and the meat side slides into decline with very little interest for others to pick up the slack and also many I am in touch with, tells me their meat operation is not profitable on its own. Those who cannot make money from meat goats will choose another avenue that looks more promising.Dairy seems to be front and centre while meat goats are on a decline.

The current pricing for live meat goats on the hoof does not add to ones bottom line and with dairy there is always the milk that can be sold as secondary. The offsprings from dairy goats are much more in demand today over breeds like the boers which seems to me has ran its coarse and with declining demand leads to declining interesting in a meat goat operation.Boers have not entered the slaughter lines in any real numbers as of yet.Meat goat production has a lot of work ahead of itself before others may wish to join in.I see many people leaving the meat goat industry today. The state of the goat industry today is really the unknown factor.Feed costs are always a major factor when it comes to any livestocks for slaughter and goats are no different.

The current meat goat industry in the Philippines offers numerous opportunities for both the sale of goat meat and meat goat breeding stock.Whether you are considering entering this industry or have been in this industry for sometime, one very important question must be asked. Can I make money from my meat goats????

Unless someone decides to own goats purely as a hobby and profit is of no concern, profitibility is the main key to any sustainable operation.

There are numerous variables that will affect profit potential.Where do I live? How far are you from a market for your producrt,do you produce or buy your feed? Are your goats on pasture or under cut and carry or dry lotted? What is the reproductive performance of your does? What is the average price you can expect to receive for your goats?Remember what works well for producer A and creates a profit does not mean the same will hold true for producer B.More or less simply put, profitability is a matter of management and each individual circumstances.

I remember once reading that identifies four fundamental conditions for success in a livestock enterprise:

-must have a viable market for your product.

-market price must exceed cost of production.

-the goal for reproductive performance is the production of at least one merchandisable unit per exposed female. The best case goal for an extensive system is,1.5 kids weaned for every doe bred.

-match your genetic potential for growth with productivity of your given environment.

So,how does someone know if there is a potential for profit or if you are making a profit? The anser is simple, know your cost of production.Cost of production is the theory that the price of an object or condition is determined by the sum of the cost of the resources that went into making it.For meat goat production, this includes everything from the average sale price of your stock to the average annual death rate of your animals.Cost of salt, minerals, depreciation on your equipment and facilities, interest cost on the monies you poured into your operation and really everything else in between.

Well I did write when the news of the goat imports were published that I hoped it would not turn into another sham as in the hog and fertilizer scams in years gone by.Nothing has changed.

It becomes very easy for those on the receiving end who were given free goats to come out and support the agriculture department, why would you not,you got something for free???All those who thought help was coming and have waited and waited,no help coming. Those who spent the money to buy cars and other luxury items for themselves should be held accountable for their actions.A complete inquiry should be held to look into those with large numbers of goats on their farms as to why would they need more free goats over those who could have really used these goat genetics and never saw a single goat and will never see any goats coming their way as usual.

It becomes hard to support any industry that is involved in so much bad news coming and for the goat industry itself. The industry has become just another joke, worldwide.

My friend Noah Goddard of Goddard's farm has informed me that someone down the road from our farm in Region 7 of Negros Oriental is buying 2 Nubian goats from him.One is a buckling and the other a doeling to arrive sometime in 2014.Noah's goats are documented in the ADGA's list of top ten milkers year to year and many other known US breeders confide in him for advice.Noah also sits on the ADGA board.Noah is well known in the dairy goat world and exports worldwide his sought after genetics and has spent two weeks in the Philippines visiting different goat farms to see for himself what is needed and what might work and what may not work.No other US breeder has made the visit and he plans to visit Negros Oriental sometime in the future.

This will put some of the most powerful lines for the Nubian breed in Negros Oriental.Out of top ten milkers,CAE and Cl free and G6S normal by testing from the lab in Texas. Some of the USA Nubians imported are out of known G6S carrier herds and never tested to prove normal over carrier and when two carriers mate, produce affected and problems will show up.When one carrier is mated to a normal, will produce 25% carriers.

This district in Negros Oriental was left out of any goat import program and private parties are having to do their own search for the much needed genetics.Lines out of Rocky Run for Sannen was bought by Mustang Sally Farm and another Sannen line is in the works for the future. This more than proves that there is an interest to get a goat industry up and running in the beautiful rural countryside without any Govt. help.

We have had lady luck on our side again.A friend up north was lucky enough to import a Nubian buckling out of the USA that was an AI directly off the great Frosty Marvin himself the other year and now has a nice light coloured buckling for us to ship to Mustang Sally Farm at about the end of Dec,2013.Frosty himself was known to make improvements in does from the very poorest to the very finest. This makes this line very high profile and the only major direct link back to Frosty Marvin himself.True we have for the most part given up on purebred Nubians this new line will help us with our hybrid crossings.

I have been asked many times. If you specialize in hybridcrosses are they not of less value over the purebreds.Any bucks, yes, to a great degree. There will always be one or two bucklings that show promise for improvements over going to the meat market.Good milking does will always hold value.People choose what's in the best interest for their business model, most like the purebreds over the crosses.Personal choice to make.Depends on your goals.

2013 helped us to secure two island born high profile bloodlines, one Saanen and the other to come, a Nubian. The sad part of this story is the fact we hold the only surviving buckling Saanen island born from that imported herd. The sire and five does and all the bucklings have since died. Not sure what two does are left but no buck to continue the line, sad to see high profile lines like these disappear never to be regained.

Frosty himself was never tested for G6S but because of the numbers of his offsprings in herds today, appears normal off Frosty himself but not to say if he was ever bred to a carrier/s does then there would be a 25% chance for carriers to be born.
