total carabao inventory as of Jan.1,2007 reached 3.38 million head.This was about 0.60% higher than last years inventory.Inventory in backyard farms which accounted for more than 99% of the total carabao population slightly increased by 0.59%.On the other hand,the inventory in commercial farms went up by 2.28%.Region 2 recorded the highest total headcount while Region 5 led in commercial headcount.The volume of carabeef imports declined by 5.87% in 2006.However,the corresponding value grew by 1.08%.On average,farmgate prices of live carabao in 2006 amounted to P51.86 per kg. liveweight,up by 6.71% compared with last years price of P48.60.The highest price of P53.90 per kilo liveweight was recorded during the month of January when it was noted to have increased by 9.46% compared with the price in the same peroid in 2005.

the countrys cattle inventory as of Jan.1,2007 was estimated at 2.56 million head,up by 1.50% compared to last years level.Of the total cattle inventory,dairy cattle stocks accounted for 12,094 head.Inventory of backyard cattle farm posted a 1.82% growth while commercial farm stocks dropped by 3.14% against last years output.Around 94% of the total stocks were raised in backyard farms.In 2006,total cattle production was estimated at 238.27 thousand metric tons.This was 3.44% lower than last years output of 246.75 thousand metric tons.The decline in production was evidenced by the drop in the number of slaughtered animals in abattoirs.The 2006 average farmgate price of live cattle was quoted at P66.44 per kilo.This was 4.62% higher than the previous years level.Average wholesale price increased to P137.45 per kg.Average retail price went up by 1.37% from last years levels.
