How to Make Concentrate Mixture for Goats Concentrates are feed supplements given to goats in addition to roughages consisting of grasses and legumes. Concentrates contains nutrient substances like energy, protein, vitamins and minerals needed for fast growth, heavier weight, and high production of milk. These are given to goats to provide them with essential nutrient that are not present or sufficient in roughages. Concentrates have low fiber content (less than 20 percent) but have high energy content (more than 60 percent).
Goat raisers normally do not provide concentrates to their animals because it is an added expense. It has been proven, however, that income from goat production increased greatly with the provision of concentrates in the following instances: when grasses and legume for the animal are insufficient; in the month immediately before the goats are sold; or in the last month of pregnancy.
Equipment needed Weighing scale Two shovels Sack String for tying the sack
Concentrate mixtures needed 17.5 kg darak 17 kg. copra meal 7 kg. ground corn 2.5 kg. soybean meal 5 kg. pulot 0.5 kg. dicalphos 0.5 asin or salt
How to make the mixture
1. Weigh each material properly as needed. If you need 50 kg, just follow the mixture indicated above. If you need 100 kg, just multiply the amount of each material needed by 2 to get the right amount.
2. Mix the materials that are needed in small amount first, such as asin, dicalphos and soybean oil meal. Mix the materials well, preferably with your hands, until the mixture becomes uniform.
3. With the use of a shovel, mix the copra meal and darak in a separate container. Mix the materials very well. Do the mixing repeatedly to make sure that the two materials are mixed very well.
4. Slowly mix the mixture of asin, dicalphos and soybean oil meal with the copra meal and darak mixture. You can also slowly pour the asin-dicalphos-soybean oil meal mixture while mixing copra meal and darak.
5. Next, mix the pulot and ground corn. Pour the molasses on the heap of ground corn. Mix very well until all the ground corn is covered by molasses.
6. Finally, slowly mix the product of No. 4 (the mixture of asin, dicalphos, soybean oil meal, copra meal, and darak) with the product of No. 5. (pulot and ground corn mixture). Make sure all the materials are mixed very well. Mix the materials repeatedly until the mixture become uniform so that the concentrates are distributed very well.
Place the concentrate mixture in a sack. It is now ready for consumption by the animal or you may wish to store it for a while.
Feeding Tips • Concentrate mixture may be given to goats as early as 1 to 2 months old. • For goats intended for meat, give them concentrate mixture one month before selling them. This would result in increased weight and better meat quality. • It is very important to give concentrates to pregnant does in order to increase their weight and be able to provide the milk needed by its kids. Give them concentrate mixture one month before kidding or delivery. • But provide just enough concentrated mixture, especially to the does, to avoid problems like bloat, enterotexemia, and acidosis.
