Do we have procedures or video's here on how to castrate goats?

It is a very good idea to castrate male goat kids that are going to be used as pack or driving goats or pets. Castration is best done with two people. One of you should get behind the goat and gently set it on its tail. Grasp the goat's front legs in each of your hands and wrap the front legs around the back legs at the knees. Hold on to the legs at this joining point.

The other person feels the scrotum (loose sac of skin holding the testicles) and locates the two cords. Push one cord over to one side of the scrotum. This is the first cord you will crush with the Burdizzo.

The burdizzo is used on only one side of the scrotum at a time. This is because if you clamp the burdizzo over the entire scrotum you will cause the scrotum sac to gangrene and complications could arise if the scrotum is large.

Clamp the burdizzo over the cord on the side of the scrotum you are doing first. Be careful to leave the goat's teats above the crushing point.

Leave the burdizzo shut ~25 seconds. You can tug on the cord to see if it feels ruptured. You can move the burdizzo down slightly closer to the testicles and open and close it again to be doubly sure that the cord ruptures.

Locate the cord on the other side of the scrotum and position the burdizzo over it.

Close the burdizzo and repeat your procedure.

When you are done, you may see a mark on each side of the scrotum. Your goat may be sore and move slowly for about a day. Be sure to encourage him to move around. At first his scrotum will swell up a little, but the testicles will gradually shrink over the next few weeks leaving a small scrotum sac.

If you don't have the burdizzo you could use scalpel and forceps.  The procedure is almost the same with castration with piglets.

I have heard of goat farmers in the Philippines using a type of rubber band for this,would be easier to do.A friend of mine,told he he tried it once and there was no difference from the goat that lost his family jewels compared to the goat that had his family jewels in size and ADG.Region 12 last year exported live goats to the Middle East SA,was told they only buy male goats that are unmarked,means that must have their family jewels and I think they also must have their horns.But this is a personal choice.
Farmers Feed The World:

The problem with the rubber band is that it is more prone to infection.

And also, there is a issue about animal welfare. If you put rubber band every day the animal is in pain because you are stopping the blood to flow on the testicle.

If you use elastrator, it takes approximately two weeks for the scrotum to dry up and fall off.
Doc in your own opinion which castration is best for you? Burdizzo, elastrator or knife?

If you practice cut and carry of grass i would suggest knife / surgical approach.
Drawback= tetanus

If you're animal is pastured then go with burdizzo.
drawback= septicemia

It is a good management plan to add baking soda with their feed.Whethers are prone to urinary problems.

Hey Mikey, if the goat did not eat the baking soda with their feed, is it okey if i put the baking soda on the water for them to be drink? or is it possible the drenching of baking soda mix with water?

Personally,I have never heard of someone adding baking soda to the goats water,its possible.Most people add it to the concentrates.Baking soda also works to prevent bloat in goats.Goats love molasses,try adding baking soda and molasses with their feed.

My goats only eat grass, leaves etc. and drink water mix with salt and lactating feeds. So how can i put the baking soda for them to eat? That's why i'm asking you if it's okey if i mix baking soda to the water for them to be drink. Maybe i should try the molasses and baking soda with their feed.

Urinary problems usually show up with goats (whethers,castrated male ) goats feed grain,like corn etc.Goats love molasses,you do not need much every day,in your case the baking soda will help prevent bloat.

last UBGSRA seminar we demonstrate castration using blade(its like slit-slit in pigs), burdizzo adn elastrator

the elastrator is demonstrated by our co-member who uses it in his lambs for years now.

on the 3 procedures i think the goat feel pain on the elastrator.

i think i do have some pics on 2 procedures except teh burdizzo coz im the one to perform it.
