Dealers Want Tariff on Imported Pork Offal to Stay
PHILIPPINES - Meat dealers and importers want the Department of Agriculture to keep the 5-per cent tariff on imported pork offal, as raising it may place poor Filipinos at a disadvantage.

"If you increase the tariff on pork offal, dalawa ang tataaman. One is the consumers who directly consume offal and second, the meat processors because they use (pork) skin and fat for processing into canned meat goods," Jesus Cham, president of Meat Importers and Traders Association, told reporters in an interview

“These processed food products are cheap protein sources for the poor," he said.

The poor consume processed pork offal — lips, cheek, liver, skin and head — as substitute for fresh pork and chicken, and increasing the tariff on imported offal would subsequently increase the prices of processed food products, according to the association.

Filipinos who subsist on $1 a day would be hit the hardest if pork offal becomes more expensive, as they cannot afford fresh pork and chicken priced at P180 ($4) per kilo and P130 ($3.25) a kilo, respectively, Mr Cham noted.

"Pork offal is about $1 a kilo. For poor Filipinos who live on $1 a day, the prices of fresh pork estimated at around $4 a kilo and chicken at $3 a kilo are simply beyond their reach," he said.

Hog raisers had earlier complained the higher volume of imported pork offal competes with locally produced pork, according to GMA News.tv.

Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) data showed imported pork offal totaled 48,450 metric tons (MT) as of 18 November, compared to the 29,000 MT shipped to the country for the whole of 2009.

United States and Canada — where pork by-products are treated as waste — are the Philippines’ main sources of imported pork offal.

Pork liver, cheeks, and ears are used in sisig, a popular Filipino dish. Skewered grilled ears and skin are also a popular street food.

There is no limit to the volume of offal shipments to the Philippines.

"The Philippines joined the [World Trade Organization] 15 years ago. Since then, we have opened our market to the world. Importers and exporters of other countries have been able to introduce more products in the market place but our local producers have stood still," said Mr Cham.

In November, the Agriculture Department announced the possibility of increasing the 5-per cent duty on imported pork offal as hog raisers said it was starting to harm the industry.

Backyard farm recovery puts modest Philippines hog production target within reach
[30 December 2010] The Philippine government's target to achieve a small 1% growth in local hog production for 2010 is possible, a report by BusinessWord said. The report quoted Bureau of Animal Industry Director Efren Nuestro as saying the target is “achievable,” as “diseases were controlled and prevented this year, and backyard farms have also recovered - although slowly - from the onslaught of typhoons in the last quarter of 2009.” He also said that the Christmas holidays should have provided an added boost for the hog industry's recovery as traditionally, demand picks up during this time.

From a market point of view, seems to be more percentages of boar blood over purebreeds when it comes to the meat industry in the Philippines. This will change as more and more farmers raise the boar breed for meat.Breeding a purebred boar sire to upgraded does will produce decent goats for meat. The key lies with having a really good sire and the 50% transfer of his genes into his offspring.

There has not been much information published when it comes to size for a given time period. We have been working on reaching the 40kg. mark in 12 months and beyond the 40kg. for a 12 month period. In order to reach the 40kg. weight size everything has to be going right.Healthy kids, deworming and the feeding of bagged concentrates.Once your goats start eating concentrates your profits start to fall.Your production overhead (related costs) plays an important role as well as the health of your stock.

Indonesian government urged to provide incentives for agribusiness
[29 December 2010] To achieve self-sufficiency in food production, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry urged the government to provide incentives to agribusiness firms willing to set up plantations in the country. This is to attract investors to enter agribusiness so Indonesia would no longer need to import sugar, corns or soybeans or even rice to meet the domestic demand in the future. Apart from incentives, the Government should also develop roads, ports and power plants in areas such as Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua to attract investors to do business in these areas.

Grain trader foresees 20 years of food security issues
[28 December 2010] During the recent International Grains Forum, founder and Managing Director of Singapore-based grain trader Agrocorp International, Vijay Iyengar, said that that global food security was one of the most important issues the world would have to deal with in the next 20 years. He also said that in a long-term look to the future, Africa and the Middle East would be the driver for imports over the next 10 years and Russia and Ukraine showed great potential for exports due to the amount of land that was slowly being made available for agriculture.

Philippines issues ban issued against poultry from Canadian province
[29 December 2010] The Philippines has imposed a temporary ban on imports of poultry products and birds from the province of Manitoba in Canada. Philippine Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said the ban was imposed after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency reported an outbreak of the disease in a commercial poultry operation in the municipality of Rockwood in Manitoba. In addition to Manitoba, the Philippines, which has remained free of the AI-virus, also has temporary bans on poultry imports from South Korea, Taiwan, Bhutan, Naevstved in Denmark, Bergamo in Italy, and North Brabant in Netherlands.

Back to the topic of breeding. The main reason why I posted the information from the ADGA was to try and show that breeding is more science than anything else.Top breeders in N.America do their homework and try and select the best future breeding bucks or does to infuse into their own herds to improve their herd overall. The information we use comes from knowing many breeders and attenting goat shows and looking up information from the ADGA before making decisions on which bloodline will help produce the best for our business.

In the Philippines only Alaminos has done testing into milk production, milk fat and protein. To try and understand their PTAs,PTI and PT% is not possible do to limited information. In truth PTAs,PTIs, and PT% is not of any advantage in the Philippines until more farms are tested and more information is published. There is also ETA.In time these will become much more important when more data is published.I have posted information about this exciting industry in the Philippines to try and help people understand what we do here in N.America with our goat industry. The industry will move forward quicker with those in the know posting what knowledge they have instead of keeping this knowledge only for their own farm(s).

Language terms:
I posted what PTAs mean
PTIs-production type index-genetic indexes that combine production and type genetic evaluations into one score.First number emphasizes production over type and the second emphasizes type over production.Zero would be no change.    Example would look something like this 133    (2.1)    134 (1.2)

PT%-predicted transmitting ability percentage.Milk fat (07) and milk protein (o4).Dates are the last calculation, the first is production and the second is type. The 44R is this line is for production reliability.      Example would look like this   44R reliability   6/99   .07     .04   1/01

ETA-estimated transmitting ability, estimate of a bucks future PTAs as an index for production and type.Production is first, type is second.Zero is no change.Example would look like this       19 (production)          -29 (type)

A production pedigree gives statistical information that is available for a goat by tracking the records of all his or her close relatives that have records.

The science from breeding comes from trying to predict what is the best bloodline to breed to your bloodline and produce future offspring that will add commercial value for your dairy operation.

For those who believe breeding is more of an art, producing good looking goats that have poor milk production adds no commercial value to any dairy operation other than having a family pet of selling the offspring for the meat industry.
8  LIVESTOCKS / Small ruminant (sheep and goat) / Re: need your advices regarding goat breed for slaughter!!!!!!!!! on: December 29, 2010, 09:49:49 AM
Gerald

In truth,in the end all goats end up as meat goats. In general, breeding a purebred boar sire (buck) with native F!s,F2s,F3 upgraded does will produce decent meat goats. One buys the best they can afford to start their breeding program.

Over the past few years there has been a move in the USA to cross a boar with dairy does and the offspring bring in higher values than the not wanted dairy goats for dairy.

With meat goats its all about ADG,(average daily gain),how fast a producer can raise his goats to market weight.

True farm gate prices vary from island to island and the smart producer will seek out his/her own market for their product or start their own goat meat market in their area.

Best of luck with your new venture.

Research: Organic zinc improves goat performance 24 Dec 2010
To determine the effects of organic zinc (Biomet Zinc, zinc-methionine chelate, Norel) on the reproductive performances of goats and growth of their offspring, a study was conducted at the goat farm of the Animal Reproduction Research Institute (ARRI) based in El Haram, Giza, Egypt.

The control group received the control diet (containing 24 ppm of zinc) while the experimental group was given the control diet plus 0.4 gram /head/day of Biomet Zinc.

The supplementation started 1 month before the expected lambing date and lasted until 2 months post kidding.

Results
Compared to the control group, diet supplemented with Biomet decreased the number of days to conception (43.2 vs. 54.4 days) and increased the conception rate (80 vs. 60%).

Weaning weight as well as average daily gain rate of the kids of the Biomet group was higher than that of the kids of the control group (11.39 vs. 9.11 kg, and 159 vs. 122 g/day, respectively).

It was also observed that the somatic cells count (SCC) decreased by 22% (120x103 vs. 155x103) when the chelated zinc was used.

It was concluded that supplementation with Biomet resulted in early return to post-kidding oestrus, improved the conception rate, and also led to heavier lambs at weaning.

Furthermore, the supplementation improved milk quality by decreasing its SCC.

DDGS good alternative ingredient for swine feeds
[27 December 2010] DDGS is an excellent alternative feed ingredient that can dramatically reduce production cost of swine producers, Dr Jerry Shurson of the University of Minnesota told participants in the a seminar sponsored by the US Grains Council in Manila. He said that DDGS inclusion levels can reach up to 30% in all phases of production and even up to 50% in gestation. Studies have shown that feeding diets containing DDGS can improve gut health in the grower-finish stage, while it may also improve litter size weaned when fed at high levels to gestating and lactating sows.

if you look under milk production you will see Six M Galexy but not under fat,it is a good bloodline but not the best as far as records go.Blissberry scored higher on milk production and fat .Lakeshore  also scored but Blissberry scored more.It is information like this that is important to have at hand when making decisions about which goat to breed to which goat.So many talk about milk production but really have very little understanding of data needed to make future decisions on how to fix the rest of their goat(s).Like I have said, not all goats are created equal. One needs to understand what is broken before they know how to fix it. A top breeder will tell you, breeding an unknown bloodline to another unknown bloddline will result in an unknown bloodline.

Philippine hog raisers working to keep pigs disease free
[24 December 2010] Philippine hog raisers are drafting plans to help keep the industry disease free, citing the need for industry stakeholders to work with the government. Mr Edwin Chen, incoming President of the Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines, Inc, said during a press conference for the launch of the Hog Convention and Trade Exhibits 2011 that hog farmers must work with government to “come up with a comprehensive solution addressing sanitary and health issues of the industry.” One of these strategies is to promote the concept of multi-site operation which will enhance disease control. The Convention is scheduled for March 17-19 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.

Udders
Over the years there has been alot of interest in goat udders and what should the udder look like.Well if we are talking about show/breeders which are really foundation stocks then the udder has to meet certain standards. The foundation doe must have a high score of PTAs that will give the breeder of the doe the knowledge needed to make a decision on which buck to use. Some bloodlines can give alot of milk and score high on udders but the PTAs might be spotty, meaning the offspring might receive decent udders or not. Some bloodlines like Hallcienda (Frost Marvin) score high on PTAs and when bred to goats of lesser quality will make major inprovements in both milk and udders.

On large commercial dairy goat farms not every goat has the perfect udder and if the doe has a poor udder but milks well she is kept as long as she is productive. The offspring might be sold off to hobby farms or the meat industry not for future breeders.Just like with humans over time with age, things start to sag and hang and as the doe becomes older she will start to loose her upper attachments.

Udders on show stock becomes much more important over a goat in a commercial dairy setting which is used for the production of milk only.Knowing which bloodline to use for the best PTAs to improve your does udder is not easy and takes research into the sires background. Not all bloodlines are created equal.

I was told someone has imported some 3 M Galexy bloodlines.Galexy is known for high milk production and good udders but its a bloodline that is better known for breeding high quality to high quality and its PTAs on poorer quality goats is not good.Frosty Marvin was known to improve any quality of goat and he was one of those rare sires that comes along only so often.

PTAs- stands for Predicted Transmitting Ability, incorporating data from production and type data of the doe, ancestors, collateral relatives and progeny. The first 3 numbers are the estimate of the pounds of milk, fat and protein to expect from each lactation of a parents furure daughter when compared to a herdmate of breed average genetic merit. The last is the PTA of change to the type score.PTA expresses the level of genetic superiorty that an animal transmits to its offspring for a given production or type trait. This value is used to rank animals based on their genetic merit.

Daughters are consistently tall, wide, dairy, and milky.

Use when stature and length of bone are needed. His traits tend to stay for generations.

Samuel works best on short, beefy does needing more milk, size, and sharpness.

Crosses well with linebred Frosty Marvin.
