I have another idea I was thinking to lease some land and grow my own feeds as we do in canada would this be posible in the phills?Any inputs on my idea would be great thankx
Investor like you in our country is most welcome. There are many idle lands in the country. Everything will boil down to having no sufficient capital why lands are not being cultivated. Owners would be happy to see their idle lands being nurtured. You can maybe start with my 4 hectare raw land (lol).

Doc, good to hear we are in the top 10 as sow producers, still believe we need a second market, exporting would really help unload our numbers.Look at Canada,if Canada had no export markets, there would not be the numbers being produced, our own in country market place could not support the numbers.Korea,China, etc. are all pork eating nations, the pork producers of the Philippines need Govts. to help us secure these markets.Thinking of planting some value added crops on the land ,the sale of the crops would help pay for the production of the hogs,am happy that the wife and I have goats, cattle, turkeys as a back up in case the bottom falls out of the pork market. Independant Producer Region 7 mikey
Mikey, we've seen better days in terms of pricing. Price wise, I doubt if we would be competitive enough against other countries. Prices of feeds and increasing overheads tend to push the farm gate price. Before we seek that Govt help in securing those markets, I think farmers should seek their true technical assistance and subsidies first to pull our costs/overhead down so as to enable us pulldown our farm gate price as well. Then, we would be competitive enough to get a chunk of the export markets.

genie_ps i have read a lot in the internet, journals about researches saying this is a good substitute for this or for that. The government must realize that we are not a dumb driving cattle that if they release a study we will just follow it blindly. They are the ones who must set an example. They must create pet/demo projects so people could see and realize the benefit of this study.

True, Doc, I cannot agree with you more. While there are issues like .5M being given to some governors and congressmen (allegedly bribes), the government on the otherhand insists we do not have extra money for ad hoc R&D's and subsidies for farmers. Many small farmers always end up losing the not so sufficient capital because of inadequate technical assistance. Farmers also lack the market protection that is always being threatened by meat smugglers and importers everytime our local media sensationalize issues like swine flu. Though it's alright to publicize it for our awareness and prevention, I think it would be of much help if they do their job by helping us prevent it and intensifying police work so as not to spread double dead meat reaching our makets.

I have one in Orani Town Market. I'm letting somebody else use it. It's a tedious job for us. Considering the small demand in our town, I'd rather sell to biyaheros or middle man. If I were in the city with a place in the market, that would be a different story.

LIVESTOCKS / AGRI-NEWS / Re: Import of meat products seen to rise in 2008

Philippines is considered an agricultural country and yet meat imports are cheaper than local meat. Why? It's obvious, the government is not doing anything about it. Many countries give subsidies to their farmers to help in their production and cut costs so as to sell affordable end products to the public. On the otherhand, our government is preying on our agricultural budgets for their own wicked purposes.
Peace.

In the end of the day it is the specs and price would count and not really the ingredients that use in it.
As long as ingredients are not substandard.
There you hit the nail right on the head, Doc. Thanks for educating a newbie.

Wow you have all the super expensive drug. Draxin is around 8t, am i right? advocin is around 600-1500?
Well as long as the animal is eating well and playful then it means they are okay.
Maybe it is just insect bite or minor skin problems.
Doc, we'll try skin solution for the itchiness and dectomax for intestinal parasite. Yeah very expensive drugs are the result of the outbreak scare (lol). Advocin is 798, Draxin is 8t.

Yes Doc, I believe it's subjective. Some farms have ad hoc formula depending on their preference. I might not totally agree with you but yes there are times only and not totally that commercial feeds are higher in specs than farm formula.
In my own opinion, there are times when raw materials are scarce like at present. If my brain RAM serves me right, the government has announced the intention of allowing importation of some 500,000 metric tonnes of corn because of our country's production shortfall. Just goes to show, that feed mills could be resorting to corn alternatives such as cassava or wheat as replacement ingredient. In which case, some farms might even get the better of the feed mills in sourcing locally since they need only very little corn compared to commercial mills. Usually, in the provinces, pig farmers are privy to deals with small corn farmers in which case feed millers don't bother doing because of their huge requirement. Understandably, it's a tedious work collecting bits and pieces from different places.
I am presently using commercial feeds, but that doesn't mean I am happy with it. Well time changes. I could go back to the old days just like what my Lola did. She used to feed her hogs with "Kulasiman and kangkong" (lol). Pero mind you Doc, mas masarap at walang kaba kainin ang baboy during the old days.
