31  LIVESTOCKS / CATTLE, CARABAO, GOAT & SHEEP / Fighting on: March 31, 2008, 10:50:06 AM
Fighting is how goats determine their place/status in the herd.

When bring new goats into a herd, there may be some fighting. The best thing to just le the fight happen because this is the way of the goat and the goat herd.

It is actually very common for a doe that has recently kidded (or sometimes right before she kids) will try to "upgrade" her status/dominance in the herd in order to secure a higher status for her kids. There is nothing you can do to stop a fight such as this. Trying to keep does that want to fight apart will only prolong the inevitable, because they will pick up the fighting whenever they get their next chance. The best thing to do is let them duke it out. It's brutal, but it is the way of goats. It is their nature.

You may also see other goats get involved, and take sides in a fight. There is nothing you can do about this either. This is a gamble on the "helper" goat's part in hopes they will be the friend and helper of the winner, thus helping their own status a bit (but not as much as actually fighting a fight).

Once a winner is decided and status amongst the herd is clarified, they will not fight anymore.

32  LIVESTOCKS / CATTLE, CARABAO, GOAT & SHEEP / At what age can goats breed? on: March 31, 2008, 10:12:19 AM
Believe it or not, a goat kid of either sex can be fertile at 7 weeks of age. That is not to say that they should be bred at this age. Intact bucks and does over 7 weeks of age should not be kept together because a young buck can, and will, breed a female at 2 months of age, this includes his mother and 2 month old sister!

33  LIVESTOCKS / CATTLE, CARABAO, GOAT & SHEEP / When can I expect my doe to come into heat so she can be bred? on: March 31, 2008, 10:05:40 AM
As far as breeding goes, there are two "types" of goats:

"Equatorial type" goats that come from climates that are hot all year long. These goats will breed all year long. Examples of these breeds are most meat breeds like Boers, Spanish & Fainting, and also Pygmies and (sometimes) Nubians.
"Alpine type" goats. These are most of the Dairy breeds. These goats are seasonal breeders, like deer, and have a definite breeding season. This usually is from about Aug. to Dec/Jan. The does will come into heat about every 21 days and the bucks will stay in rut during the entire breeding season. Once the buck go out of rut, they loose most of their interest in sex until the next rut.
34  LIVESTOCKS / CATTLE, CARABAO, GOAT & SHEEP / How can I tell if my goat is pregnant? on: March 31, 2008, 10:04:16 AM
The normal gestation time is 145-155 days. Some breeds tend to kid on the early side and some on the late side. Count 150 days from when the doe was bred and prepare for kids at least week before. (Our herd actually averages 6 days early, which means we are prepared for our does kidding at day 142)

Due Date Calculator- Use Calculator to help estimate when your doe will kid.

You cannot tell if a goat is pregnant by looking at them.

35  LIVESTOCKS / Small ruminant (sheep and goat) / How many years will a doe continue to produce babies? on: March 31, 2008, 10:02:08 AM
A doe will continue to go into heat and breed her entire life. She never goes through menopause like a human. Since the "normal" life span is 11-12 years , if exposed to a buck, she will continue to breed and have babies until she dies.

BUT, the cause of death for many older does is usually kidding/pregnancy related so if you wish to extend her life, you may decide to retire her at some point from kidding. If you decide to retire your doe, do not expose her to bucks any longer. She will continue to go into heat for the rest of her life.

Does that are "retired" from breeding around age 9 -10 live longer (16-20 years, and I just recently found a doe who was 24; she was retired from kidding at age 10).

Doc, is vitamin ADE is only for sex drive? or it will increase the egg cell of the sow? If i inject vitamin ADE will it increase the litter of the sow?

About sa vitamin B naman. diba doc marami klase ng vitamin B? What kind of vitaminm B will i buy? I saw vitamin B comlex with liver extract, is it okey doc? Pasensya na dami ko tanong? Cheesy
37  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: SOW on: March 28, 2008, 05:55:51 PM
Yup, HCV 3 weeks after farrowing. Yes you use simultaneous with the piglet. It is Intended that way to reduce the cost. Once you have opened a hog cholera vaccine at most you can only use it within 3 hrs and you cannot use it anymore. Unlike other vaccine that you can store in the ref.  In terms of milk  there is a slim probability that it would reduce the milk production. Incase there will be reduce milk production the chance that it will affect the piglet is also slim because at this age the piglets is already eating solid food. So if there is decrease milk they will just increase their solid food intake.

Doc, how many ml. of hog cholera vaccine will i give to the piglets and sow?
