Hi Doc Nemo,

Sorry, I posted 2 topics on the forum. It is on the Flushing of Gilts and Vaccination Program
when it can be covered by 1 topic only.

The landrace gilt arrived in the farm last March 25,2008. We have given already the following:
March 25 - Electrotyles Water soluble powder
March 26 - Pseudorabies Vaccine
March 29 - Deworming ( Ivermectin)
April 02   - (Tentative)- Hog Cholera and soon ....
But Gilt  comes to First Heat last Friday ( March 28) and after 21 days it will be her 2nd Heat.
What shall we do Doc? Thanks.

Nick

Yes, you have to stop the vaccination program for that particular gilt.

In terms of pregnancy vaccination, email me the particular vaccination where you stop in the gilt and let's see what adjustment we could do or if we could just continue the pregnancy vaccination.

Hi Doc Nemo,

What about the vaccination program of the gilt? We have not finish yet the implementation program you have given to me? If we breed the gilt on its 2nd Heat ,then we will be counting days of its pregnany and to implement the pregnancy vaccination program? Please advise. Thanks.

Nick

Yes you can  start to breed it on it's second heat. Especially if the animal is on the 110-130 kg already.

You can also use your largewhite boar.

There are times that first parity(unang anakan)  have small number of piglets born, it is normal. It will increase on the 2nd and 3rd etc..

Dear Doc,
If we breed the gilt aged 7-8 months old and  we did not complete the vaccination program
introduce for the gilt before her breed? Do we have to stop then follow the pregnancy
vaccination?
Thanks,
Nick

Dear Doc Nemo,
Good day Doc. My landrace gilt has her first heat since last Friday (Mar.28)
and will be 7 months old this coming April 2. My question are: Is the gilt can
be breed on its second heat or I will wait for the 3rd heat for her breeding?
Can I use also my largewhite boar aged almost as my landrace gilt to service her?

Thanks,
Nick

Terminology:  standing heat:This it the time on which a gilt or a sow becomes receptive to a boar/
                                       Nagpapabulog na siya.
Flushing

Flushing is done to a gilt to increase the release of eggs in its ovaries.
This is done by increasing the feed intake 10-14 days prior to standing heat.

How to do it:

Usually we breed the sow at 7-8 months of age or if it has already stood to heat 2-3 times.

So, if the animal first heat is around 6 months you need to count 21 days to its second heat.  Then another 21 days to its third heat.

At the start of the second heat count 11 days and when that day comes increase the feed intake of the animal.

And at its next heat (around 10 days later) you can then breed it already.

Dear Doc Nemo,
Good Day.
As a beginner on piggery business. I would like to ask about the timing of the buyer to acquire our fatteners
(slaughter pigs). Suppose to be the fatteners will not be given feeds and water for the whole day as instructed by the buyer before they come to weigh the pigs. It so happen that my caretaker forgot to
cut- off or close the water line in the morning and only do so after lunch. At 3pm when the buyer comes they found out that water was dripping out in the nipple drinkers. So they refuse to weigh the pigs and
tells my caretaker that they will just come back the following day at 7am.

My questions are: "Are there losses incurred in the live-wieght kilo of the fatteners due to  fasting for almost
24 hours?" Did we make mistakes for selling the fatteners the following morning?" 25 heads are involved.

Thanks,

Nick S.
