271  LIVESTOCKS / BREEDING / Re: Cross breeding... on: April 20, 2008, 07:27:33 PM
Thanks Doc for your kind help. Nick

It is always the recommendation to get your F1 from reputable farms rather than creating your own.

But it is doesn't mean that it is prohibited to create your own F1. Advantage of having F1 from reputable farms is that they are already tested while your own F1 might be not that good as theirs but it also a possibility that your F1 could be better than theirs.

I have seen some backyards who have a better F1 than farms.

If you have the boar use it. It is from a reputable company so it will produce a good piglet.
272  LIVESTOCKS / BREEDING / Re: Cross breeding... on: April 19, 2008, 08:19:27 PM
Hi Doc,

I have now the following herd:
2-F1 gilts, 1- landrace gilt and 1-largewhite boar. They all came from
Holiday Hills Farm. I idea is to produce my own F1 basing on the breeding
criteria as explained ( LR x LW). My plan now is to cross my 2-F1 with my largewhite
boar coz I dont have a Duroc Boar yet. Is this breeding also  good for
slaughter pig? or better I will avail an  AI of Duroc to produce my slaughter
pigs? Thanks

Rather than  to use the backcross. Use your F1(LwxLR), breed it with the duroc. The piglet produce is a good slaughter pig.

just a reminder, individual breed like landrace/ largewhite/ duroc still have an individual performance, so always collect the data and choose the best animal in the batch.
273  LIVESTOCKS / BREEDING / Re: Cross breeding... on: April 17, 2008, 08:08:15 PM
Doc,

This backcross breed (75%LW x 25%LR) if cross to a Duroc will give better
quality of slaughter pig or not? Or it is better to breed with Duroc?
Thanks.
Nick

F1( 50%lw x 50%lr) x lw= 75%LW x Lr 25%

It is called backcross

Backcross=the progeny(F1) is mated to one of the original breeds.

If you cross it again to LW it will not be pure LW. Still there is a percent LR.

Predominantly the sow line would be LW because of the percentage of LW.

Hi Doc,
If an F1 Sow (50% LR x 50% LW) is cross to pure LW it will give you
75% LR x 25% LR ? Do we call this an upgraded F1? And if you cross again
this to another pure LW it will give you 100% pure LW? When do we call Sow Line?
Thanks. Nick

Cross breeding a F1 x duroc= usually fattener or slaughter hogs.

If your boar is pure duroc= piglet should be atleast 50% colored,

F1= result of breeding of two different breeds of pig ex. largewhite x landrace, largewhite x duroc etc.

F1 sow = usually landrace x largewhite. You can buy Grand parent stock or parent stock sow and boar from reputable company. Cost would range from 20-60t

boar= usually duroc or pietrain.

NOte:  The most important part of breeding is not the breed itself but the performance of the animal. Always ask for performance record of every sow you bought.
275  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Flushing in gilts on: April 15, 2008, 11:27:41 AM
Ok Doc it is clear now to me.. Thanks

nick

Actually it is not the "masatisfy issue" some use a new boar to a sow because tentatively sows are more receptive than gilts. So, in essence there are less chances that the sow will refuse the boar, on the part of the boar his first time would not be frustrating.

But there is also a chance that if the sow is big then it would be a problem for the new boar because there is a height difference, he cannot service the sow properly and it would be frustrating on his part. And also there are also some sow that are not receptive enough even they are in heat.

As you could see it is a see-saw idea. It might go both ways.

So, it is  a matter of assuring the gilt will not move when she is being bred, meaning she should be really in-heat. To be certain, apply back pressure. Let your caretaker ride/ press hard  on the rump area of the gilt simulating the weight of the boar. If the gilt will not move then it would be okay to use your boar.
276  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Flushing in gilts on: April 14, 2008, 10:20:49 PM
Hi Doc,

I just came from my farm. My neighbor backyard raisers told me that my largewhite boar should serve
for his first time a sow (nakaranas na manganak) to satisfy him, so that on his next service there won't
be any problem. Is their idea correct Doc? Besides, there is no more time for the largewhite boar to service others
for he will service the landrace gilt tentatively on Saturday. What about giving GONADIN to the landrace gilt so that heat na heat ito at hinde makapalag during their mating? Thanks.

Nick

The April 19 is still a tentative, bred her kapag pumapayag na siya whether it falls in 19 or earlier.

The usual age is around 8 months to use the boar but 7 1/2 is not that far naman. You can use him and repeat the following day.  For starter one gilt per week  mo lang siya pwede magservice.  If 8 months na siya 2 sow per week pwede na siya.

277  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: biogas on: April 09, 2008, 09:15:20 PM
Hi Doc,
I want to know if BIOGAS can drive a 1 hp motor for electricity?
Do you have any contact person for this kind of job?
Thanks. Nick

Maintenance is depending on the size.

If you look at the biogas digester it is just a modified pit.

I would post here maybe on Saturday  or Sunday about biogas design, science etc..

279  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Junior Boar Usage or Services on: April 04, 2008, 08:40:49 PM
Hi Doc,
Pasencia na,maari po ba magtanong ulit? This is regarding the usage or services to be rendered by my largewhite boar to my landrace gilt. The boar bday is 09/04/07 and the gilt bday is 09/02/07. Tentatively the 2nd Heat of the gilt is on Apr.17 and to be breed on Apr. 19 as previously discussed. My question is, can the boar make a follow-up service(2nd) the following day to the gilt considering the boar age?
Thanks, Nick

Yes you can  start to breed it on it's second heat. Especially if the animal is on the 110-130 kg already.

You can also use your largewhite boar.

There are times that first parity(unang anakan)  have small number of piglets born, it is normal. It will increase on the 2nd and 3rd etc..

280  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Boar Footbath on: April 03, 2008, 07:46:18 PM
Thanks Doc.
Nick

Ah okay, sorry my mistake.

Foot rot is caused fusobacterium and also some mixed infection with other fungal organism.

The flooring should always be dry and clean. It should also be slip free but not too rough.

IF the floor is too rough it might cause some breakage in the nail of the boar and bacteria would set in. If the floor is to slippery it might cause sprain to the animal or cuts in its leg.

Bathing your animal with soap especially the leg part would help.

In cases that you experience foot rot this are some of the things you could do.

You could use spray antiseptic for the foot rot.

Sometimes what i would do i flush the feet with antibiotic then use gusanex spray to it.

You could put beddings to the floor so it would help alleviate stress/pressure in the problem feet.

Thanks. Nick

Non i know, unless your pig has allergic rhinitis.

If they cough a lot then it is not advisable to burn to drive away mosquito.

282  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Boar Footbath on: April 03, 2008, 01:36:14 PM
Thanks Doc,
But my question is on the care of a boar.
How do we prevent the cracking of boar's hoof and foot rot?
Thanks,
Nick

Foot bath is usually place in the entrance of every barn house or pen housing of the animal.

IT is a shallow pool of disinfectant on which people will dip their shoes (disinfectant is  usually sole  height) before entering a particular housing. This will reduce the chance of transfer of diseases from one housing to another and transfer of bacteria from the outside going in.

You may also put foot bath on the main gate of your property.
283  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Barn/ Mosquitos on: April 02, 2008, 10:11:41 PM
Hi Doc,
Is there any effect caused by smoke to pregnant sow or gilt if we burn dried leaves to drive mosquitos away in the barn ? of course except choking your pig.

Nick

Smokes from dried ipil ipil(leaf) and lansones(fruitcovering) are good mosquito repelllant.

Hi Doc Nemo,

Can you please help me explaining regarding the boar footbath? What are the veterinary medicines
needed and applied and how this it is done for what purpose?

Thanks,

Nick

Doc Nemo,
Thanks a lot for your help. As a beginner on Backyard Swine  Business I treasure it.
I will keep you inform and GOD BLESS.

Nick

It is okay.

You could do this schedule
Apr 2 Hog cholera
April 9 pseudo
April 14 parvo
April 19 tentative breeding date

FMD is omitted. If there is a case within your area in the last 3 months you need to vaccinate.

Continue with the original pregnant and lactating schedule.
