256  LIVESTOCKS / BREEDING / Re: A1 vs. Natural Method on GILT on: May 15, 2008, 10:07:01 PM
Hi Doc,
Naitanong ko lang po itong question kasi my boar just recovered from swine dysentery as per my post here last May 2,2008 under the topic "Pamamaga ng paa". Remember you advise me not to use the boar because it might infect the gilt? How long are we going to wait for the recovery of the boar from swine dysentery before it can do service? The boar is fast recovering now and 2 F1 are to be breed next week ( May 20 and 23). If we can't use it, then we have to use AI unless we can find another boar to breed. My problem with AI
today is that I can't find an AI center in Cavite area, we have to go to Batangas or Laguna.
Thanks,
Nick

They have both Cons and Pro's

AI- less chance of the sow getting hurt/pilay. Conception rate is  lower compared to natural.

Natural- higher conception rate but higher risk of physical injury.

In the past years the primary use of AI is to improve the genetics.

In your case, you have a quality boar then better use it.

A.I. is okay for those who don't have a boar or doesn't want to maintain a boar.

257  LIVESTOCKS / BREEDING / A1 vs. Natural Method on GILT on: May 14, 2008, 06:59:16 PM
Hi Doc. I'm confuse which method to apply on true heat gilt.
Some said that the natural way by using the boar is the best method
for the gilt( kasi first time manganak) while books and training tells either way
of both Artificial Insemination (A1) or using boar. On your personal experience
what is the best method Doc?
Thanks,
Nick
258  LIVESTOCKS / HOUSING / Re: WEANING PEN FOR PIGLETS on: May 14, 2008, 06:38:39 PM
Thanks Doc

a 2 x 2 meter pen could accommodate 10 piglets. Height of the partition could be 50-70 cm and if elevated around 30-50 cm from the ground.

They can stay there to about 30 days.

260  LIVESTOCKS / HOUSING / WEANING PEN FOR PIGLETS on: May 13, 2008, 08:03:45 PM
Hi Doc Nemo, I want to know what is the size of Weaning Pen for ten (10) piglets (max). The height
of the pen and if elevated, what is the elevation from the ground ? How long or how many kilos the piglets will stay on weaning pen before they are transfered to fattening pen ?
Thanks.
261  LIVESTOCKS / DISEASES / Re: Pamamaga ng Paa on: May 05, 2008, 07:46:37 PM
OK thanks Doc Nemo.

Not adviseable to use your boar especially it is still recovering and it might infect the gilt if you use it as a breeding boar.
262  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Pag aalaga ng baboy on: May 05, 2008, 06:00:40 PM
Hi Doc

Have you heard also CAFFMACO in Silang, CAvite?

Nick

Hi Nemo,

I am an OFW at ngayon ay nasa Vietnam ako.

have you heard LIMCOMA bro?

brief history
Quote
In the early 1960's, there was massive infestation of the citrus plantation in Lipa and other Batangas towns.  This led the entrepreneur farmers in these areas to shift to poultry and hog raising.  The industry flourished except that after a few years, the prices of feeds rose to levels beyond the reach of the small scale growers.  They knew then that unless an immediate solution is found, the industry will die a natural death.  To prevent this from happening, a group of poultry raisers led by Eng'r. Claro R. Malleta agreed to organize a cooperative that will mill their own feeds and supply their own feed supplements.  Thus, on April 09, 1970, the Lipa City Multi-Purpose Cooperative Marketing Association (LIMCOMA) was established with 77 incorporators and an authorized capital of P1 Million.

The Cooperative started operations by renting a rice mill for its feedmilling activities and selling on cash-on-delivery basis to customer-members.  Through the efforts of Eng'r. Malleta, a 15-day credit line from suppliers of feed ingredients was obtained.  After some time, the Cooperative, was able to acquire the mill site and started to buy its own feedmill machineries.

On April 20, 1992,  Lipa City Multi-Purpose Marketing Association was changed to the now popularly-known name LIMCOMA MULTI-PURPOSE COOPERATIVE.  After 35 years of operation, its membership has grown from 77 to 5,940 members.  Its paid-up capital  and assets rose from P57,000 to P93.7 Million and 506 Million, respectively .  It now has an administration building, 4 warehouses, two (2) 1,800 tonner corn silos, a truckscale, a well-equipped quality control laboratory, an animal diagnostic laboratory, an artificial insemination laboratory, 4 major branches (including Main Office), 22 modified branches, a modest meat processing plant and rural banks (2).  LIMCOMA is now operating a 30-ton per hour fully mechanized feedmill that produces 3,800 bags per 8-hour shift.  This is the most modern and the first-of-its-kind in Batangas. Following the trend in feedmilling industry, Limcoma has likewise acquired a Pelleting Machine.

As LIMCOMA enters its 35th year, it continues to aim for the best quality products and services.  New products are in store for development for a more complete and diversified cooperative that we intend to become.  Short-term and long-term plans had been laid out to provide complete service to its members and foster professional development in the management of its affairs.

Limcoma may well be considered as the "Father of Feedmilling Business in Batangas"  as it awakens the minds of our farmers to stand up from their long futility and compete with multi-national feedmillers.

And through the years, Limcoma has functioned not only as a medium that continuously support the livelihood of its members but also as an organization that uphold programs which directly benefit the members and the community where it belongs which truly manifests its vision and mission statement.

Hi Doc,
Now, we are counting again 21 days at ipa-
service ito for breeding. Puede na ba namin gamitin ang boar? Tentatively on May 20 and May 23
pag nag true heat ang dalawang F1?

Thanks,
Nick

doxycyline+tiamulin is good combination.

You could also give additional iron supplement for the boar.

Some disease that might cause bloody scour is salmonella, ilietis, whip worm etc and the most severe is swine dysentery.

Usual suspect is swine dysentery, you need to isolate the animal and the caretaker from the other pigs. If you have 2 caretaker designate a caretaker that will handle the boar alone and he/she must not handle the other pigs.

You also need to give oral antibiotic for the whole herd everyday until the boar recover.
264  LIVESTOCKS / DISEASES / Re: Pamamaga ng Paa on: May 03, 2008, 08:17:36 PM
Thanks again Doc,

I just called my caretaker  now to implement the medication early morning bukas.

Nick

If you could find a water soluble iron the better. If none, the injectable would do. If you inject the antibiotic in the left side inject the iron on the right.

Oral antibiotic is almost safe for pregnant gilts or sow

265  LIVESTOCKS / DISEASES / Re: Pamamaga ng Paa (Sick Boar) on: May 03, 2008, 07:49:53 PM
Thanks Doc,

b. Yung "iron supplement" ba water soluble or injection? If injection puede din isabay sa
    doxycyline+tiamulin?

    2-3 weeks ago?

266  LIVESTOCKS / DISEASES / Sick Boar on: May 02, 2008, 08:36:38 PM
Hi Doc,
Rememeber my largewhite boar that is having a "pigsa" ? Now we have an additional
problem. After giving the boar "amoxtin soluble" last Saturday( 4/26/08) for the "pigsa",
this morning mycaretaker txted me that the boar manure is mixed brown / black and
eat only few without consuming his ration of 1kg. feeds. During  noontime his manure
is having mixed with blood. They consulted a municipal veterinarian and they injected "biodyl".
Bukas maaga pa me punta
doon sa farm. The boar has no warranty from Holiday Hills ng binili ko ito.

Thanks,
Nick
267  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Boar Footbath on: April 30, 2008, 09:41:15 PM
Thanks Doc

I haven't had a case on which an animal die from pigsa/boil.

It is cause of bacteria like strep which is also the same bacteria that cause boil in human. ALthough in animal it is not only strep but mixed infection can cause it.

usually rough surface / protruding metal in the pen is the cause of boil or over used needle that we used for injection can cause it.

For my opinion it is almost normal to see boil in a given farm but usually the economic impact is not that detrimental.

In your case your problem is more of the leg. You can drain the pigsa and flush it with antibiotic. and also can give anti-inflammatory.

The possibility of death is always there but in my case like i said i have never encountered one.

268  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Boar Footbath ( Pigsa sa Paa) on: April 29, 2008, 08:40:57 PM
Hi Doc,

Ask ko lang if it is true that "pigsa" can cause death to pigs. Meron kasi pigsa sa paa
ang boar. What causes "pigsa", is this the  same "pigsa"  to human beings? How can we prevent
it?

Thanks Doc.
Nick

Ah okay, sorry my mistake.

Foot rot is caused fusobacterium and also some mixed infection with other fungal organism.

The flooring should always be dry and clean. It should also be slip free but not too rough.

IF the floor is too rough it might cause some breakage in the nail of the boar and bacteria would set in. If the floor is to slippery it might cause sprain to the animal or cuts in its leg.

Bathing your animal with soap especially the leg part would help.

In cases that you experience foot rot this are some of the things you could do.

You could use spray antiseptic for the foot rot.

Sometimes what i would do i flush the feet with antibiotic then use gusanex spray to it.

You could put beddings to the floor so it would help alleviate stress/pressure in the problem feet.
269  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Flushing in gilts on: April 22, 2008, 10:11:38 PM
Hi Doc,

At last the landrace gilt was on standing heat last night at around 7pm and mated by largewhite
boar and it was repeated this morning at around 7am. We will observe now until 21st day if it will become pregnant. Thanks a lot for your advises.

Nick

Try to stress the gilt.

Give only little food. Around 1/2 of it's usual feed allocation for 3 days.
Observed, if they will come to heat. Some farm don't give food literally to their animal but i think that too much stress.

If still no effect, give hormone. If still no effect ask the farm where you brought the gilt if they can give replacement. Some breeding farm offer some kind of warranty/assurance.

270  LIVESTOCKS / SWINE / Re: Flushing in gilts on: April 21, 2008, 07:58:55 PM
Hi Doc,

We have been observing the landrace gilt to come into heat since last April 17
so that we can breed on the 19th. But unfotunately until now, April 21 ,the gilt did
not come to heat or standing heat. What shall we do Doc? Shall we wait or any
suggestions from you? Thanks.

Nick

The April 19 is still a tentative, bred her kapag pumapayag na siya whether it falls in 19 or earlier.

The usual age is around 8 months to use the boar but 7 1/2 is not that far naman. You can use him and repeat the following day.
