Meron kaming biik around 60 days old na at bigla lang namatay sa fattening pen.
Mga 2 weeks na sila sa fattening pen at wala naman signs na may sakit. Kaninang
umaga may lagnat at di na nabigyan ng gamot kasi bigla na lang namatay..Kaya
nagpa inject ako ng PRV sa lahat na biik sa piggery ngayon hapon. Ano kaya ang sakit
ng biik na iyon ?  Napa balita sa radyo kaninang umaga na may swine flu ngayon. Ano naman
ang preventive medicines nito ?

if the smallest one ang namamatay then it is just statistic.
It is better na the weakling dies early rather than cost you more and die later on.

From the picture you send me, i think most of the wounds are caused by the bamboo flooring. Splinters from this could cut the knee, feet of the animal.

If you change the bamboo flooring to plastic or cast iron then it would be better.

We notice today that the teats of the gilt, ( the one that did not come to 2nd heat until now on 24th day), become
13 only and the other one did not protrude or lumabas katulad ng iba, umurong  ito paloob instead na palabas.
Magandang po bang gagawing  inahin ito kapag 13 teats na lang ?

Suppose to be the 2nd heat will be on March 6, (21 days after the 1st heat ), ngunit napa aga
ang dating ng 2nd heat, instead of March 6 nag standing heat ito ng March 4 at dalawa sila sang
ng heat also on Feb 21. Natural lang ba na maaga lumandi at hindi pumatak
sa 21 days ?
At ang isa  na nag 1st heat last Feb13 ay hindi lumandi until now ( 24 days ), mag lalandi pa ba ito
for  2nd heat o may problema na ang gilt ? Ano naman Doc ang silent heater ? Salamat.

it is not normal, wait for march 6  and see if it will heat normally. March 6 would be the normal 2nd heat.

Or its 2nd heat could be March 14 assuming that Feb 21 is its "true heat".

It seldom happen but it do occurs sometimes in animal after its heat period it will show another sign of heat 9-11 days after its heat period, this is pseudoheat.

Stick with the 21 day cycle whether it will fall on march 6 or march 14 it will be considered as 2nd heat pa rin.

Don't adjust the vaccination.

Sad to say but we have 2 mortality of piglets already.
This happens everytime we vaccinate and the following day there is mortality.
(After 3 days from birth, we injected iron, the next day we have 1 mortality.
On the 7th day, we inject mycoplasma, the following day 1 mortality.) Iyong mga maliliit
ang namamatay.
Also the piglets have wounds on knees and below, 2- have bukol sa paa, pero
malambot. Sabi ng iba talagang ganyan na magka sugat sa tuhod dahil sa pagdede sa
inahin kasi nag aagawan at magka bukol sa paa. Ano kaya ang magandang remedy
para maiwasan ang mga ganitong pangyayari ?

The only problem is that the sow has 14 teats ( nipples ) and she has 16 piglets. So what we did,
we assigned 3 persons to take care of the piglets 24 hrs a day. They will make sure that all the piglets has
suck milk from their mother. Otherwise, those that are small cannot suck milk.

Yup.

If you want to expand your sow i would suggest to monitor this batch of piglets. If they grow fast and not prone to disease, you could choose from this batch a possible gilt.

usually the recommendation is to choose from first or 2nd parity but in your case this is the first time that they farrowed in your care,  so you can make an exception.

Hi Doc,
Good news. I was in the farm since Friday and went home today. Our sow farrowed last Saturday ( 2/28/09), at around
330pm. She farrowed 16 piglets alive anf 1 mummified. Tha average wt of 16 piglets is 1.22kg, the biggest weighs 1.6kg
and the smallest 0.80 kg at 4 sila.

Doc , I just want to confirm the vaccination program on 5th parity which you answer on this forum. I will proceed
with your vaccination program as per advice ?

Ask ko lang po. Puede ba mag inject ng Vitamins B with liver extract sa mga Gilts
and Junior Boars kahit na ang mga ito ay on-going ang vaccination program para
sa kanila? May natira pa sa ginamit namin noon at kong puede pa ba ito ibigay ?

One (1) of our F1 ay pregnant na for 7 weeks on her 2nd parity, and today we
noticed nga may creamy discharges sa puerta nito. Creamy na parang milk.
Ano kaya ito Doc ? Considering na nag reheat sia before after 42 days from
AI. We thought na buntis sia pero di pala. Kaya ni rebreed namin ulit at ito na
sia may creamy discharges. Pano ba ito ?

One of the Gilt ( Carmen ) has her 1st Heat last Feb 13, and last Feb. 21 heats again for her 2nd Heat.,instead on Mar.6.Is it normal or abnormal for a Gilt to come into Heat within 8 days instead of 21 days? Do we have to breed
when the 3rd Heat comes ? By this time, Age of the Gilt is about 210 days and about 134 kg only.
Do we have also to adjust the vaccination program for Gilts? Instead of 7 days interval per vaccine , can we adjust to  5 days interval ?

Hi Doc,
I have 3- F1 gilts ( Carmen, Nena, and Myrna )and they are sisters. They aged 6 months and 1 week.
Their 1st heat was last Feb.13,2009 at sabay-sabay. Carmen weighs = 134 kgs,
Nena weighs = 105 kgs and Myrna weighs = 97 kgs, and they on the same pig pen.
I want to separate Carmen for she is already overweight to breed at around 120 - 130 kgs.,
para makakain din ng husto sina Nena at Myrna to catch up with their breeding weight.
Will it be ok to separate Carmen and it will not affect  them for their ovulation period
on their 2nd heat and 3rd heat ?

you could use lutalyse 48 hours after the sow farrowed. This will the animal to return to heat faster. You could give 2 ml.

If the animal farrowed and the inunan is not yet expelled give 2 ml of oxytocin. THis will facilitate in the expulsion of the inunan.

FCR, yes. ito yun gaano karaming pagkain ang need niya para bumigat ng isang kilo. If he eat 2.35 kg of feed he will gain 1 kilo meat.

ADG= ito yun ibinibigat ng baboy kada araw. So, in essence on average he will gain 0.638 kgs per day

Doc, ang ibig sabihin ng FCR, ay weight o timbang na na-e-convert ng baboy sa pagkain niya araw-araw ?
At ang ADG naman ay ang average na timbang nakuha from birth to selling ? OR Vice Versa ?

     = 85 kgs - 1.5 kgs (weight at birth) / 150 days
=0.556 grams /day

some compute ADG at weaning weight na
 =85 kg - 8.5 kg (weaning weight) / 120 days
=0.638 grams / per day
the higher the number the better

FCR = the amount of feed given to the animal to gain 1 kilo of meat

FCR= total amount of feed consumed(booster, prestarter, starter, grower, finisher) / final weight
     = 200kgs of feeds / 85 kgs
    = 2.35
the lower the lumber the better.
