Cattle Fattening:

has gained prominence as an important business project of the livestock industry,in the Philippines. It gives the producer year round work and provides the family with added income. One can make use of cheap plentiful farm by products such as corn stovers, rice straw, copra meal, rice bran and sugarcane tops. Most important it is a high protein food for the Philippine diet.Backyard cattle fattening or on a large scale can be a profitable venture.Buying healthy stock, feeding and fattening them for 120-180 days, selling them at any time of the year.Mimimum space for housing is 1.5-2 sq.meters per head for sheltered feeding area,5 meters per head for a fenced loafing area.Given proper care, there is less danger of diseases and parasites, affecting confined stock and a shorter fattening period.Marbling or intermixture of fat and lean meat is better obtained through feedlot fattening. This is prefered by customers.

Mr Hog,you are right, more expensive to buy,a fair amount of cattle fattening around our area, smallholders with 1-2 cattle as backyard operations, buyers buy them for markets in the city.

hi,we have mainly a cow/calf operation,7 cows and 1 bull.Sorry I do not have a FS myself. We rent out the calves at 1-1 1/2 years old and the renter feeds them for 1 year and they are sold at 24-30 months old.We feed them corn/rice bran, molasses and salt and napier grass, malunggay leaves and a few other grasses.Maybe Doc. Nemo has a FS on fattening. We do not do the fattening ourselves.

I'm seriously into this now. I have a couple of heads for trying it out.
Can anybody tell me how do they go about their fattening process? program?
When do you feed the 'feeds' (darak, grinded corn, commercial grower mix, mollases, etc)...and how do you feed them? dry? wet?
how much percent on hay?
How does one calculate the required qty of food per day? % moisture?

the basic is 10% ng body weight ang ipakain mo na damo.
you can feed them corn etc.. pero very minimal lang kasi pwede silang magkaroon ng bloat.

Thanks for the reply doc.
Since I want to get my cattle to take on weight asap. Up to how much can I feed corn mixed feed? 1kg? 2kg?
Whats the relationship or equivalent of 20kg of fresh grass compared to dried grass? how about in terms of commercial feed? I understand that ruminants are designed to breakdown cellulose material...so grasses should still be the norm.
Does intensive cattle fattening being done in the philippines?

Every grass kasi iba iba ang water content nito so medyo mahirap ang pagcompute nito.
Better ad lib mo nalang siya sa grass then give UMMB para mabilis ito lumaki.
