Title: Space & Fencing:
Post by: mikey on January 01, 2008, 12:37:28 AM
goats need and enjoy exercise. One will have fewer fence problems if space allotments are liberal and daily fresh, palatable feeds are provided generously.A minimal interior space of 2.5 sq.m. per adult goat is most common in tropical countries,10 sq.m. per goat is ideal.A fenced area that allows 40sq.m. per goat with a fence 1.5 m.-1.8m. high per goat is common in most tropical countries.Fencing should allow for maximum air circulation for hot weather.Posts should be placed not more than 1.5m. apart,a bottom strand of wire is needed  close to the ground to stop kids from crawling underneath.High tensile fence, barbed wire, poultry wire, bamboo timber and sticks all have pros and cons. Some sizes of wire mesh fence may be harmful if they allow kids with horns to insert their heads and become trapped.Vertical wood or bamboo pieces also invite trapped heads.Horizontal wire on fencing invites climbing,A sheltered container filled with clean water should always be available.Outside grassracks should be sheltered against the sun, rain, with a bottom trough to reduce waste.
Our fencing starts with hog wire, over the hog wire we place poultry wire.goats unable to insert their heads now, above the hog/poultry wire we place barbed wire for security,we prefer a 2m. high fence.Due to our remote location in Region # 7,we prefer a higher fence, all of our stock has horns.

space requirement for goats (interior):
does/bucks/adults-0.75-1.50-flooring square meter
                         -15.24-25.40-feeding linear cm.
growing                -0.50-0.75-flooring sq.m.
                          -10.16-15.24-feeding linear cm.
kids                     -0.20-0.50-flooring sq. m.
                          -7.62-12.70-feeding linear cm.

a fenced laofing area beside the goat house must be provided (100-150 m2/50 hd.),complete with feeding racks and water troughs,to allow goats to loaf freely.Flooring of the area must be cemented to facilitate drying.Cogon and nipa as roof materials are perfered in hot and humid areas.
