Hi nemo and all.My quistion is here in canada we have barns to keep the pigs in what if we built a barn (totally inclosed) and had an excaust fan on top of the roof that would be also a good way to keep the smell down right?Another reason for this is to keep the birds and mosquitos out.We had a pig (fattener)die the other day from a mosquito bite..Is this possible ever hear about that?

There are some farm now in the philippines that uses this type of system. But instead on top they put the exhaust fan on the side. They call it tunnel ventilation. The problem of this kind of system is that you need a huge amount of money to build and maintain. For sure your electricity will sky rocket. Some farm has minimized their electrical bills because they have an biogas connected to a generator.

Mosquito bite? Never heard of it?  Maybe your caretaker have mistaken the disease of your animal as due to mosquito bite.

There are some disease that causes a "mosquito bite like" mark on the skin of the animal like erysipelas, hog cholera, mange etc.

Or it is  possible that the mark in the animal is really a mosquito bite but it is not the cause of death of the animal

Also sir about your question in the other forum.

Stillbirth is uncommon but it accounts to about maybe 3-5% in a farm's problems so every 100 piglet born there is a chance that 3-5 piglet are stillborn.

Hi Mr Hog,yes it is true (mosquitos) can cause us farmers real problems,a few years back we had problems with the mosquitos, lost some piglets, vets were there to give injections, still lost some. One of the problem I see hog farming in the tropics,is shelter,we cannot totally enclose,I tried this and the pigs almost died from overheating, tore the metal siding off used bamboo (vertical) helps air to past through. The cement bottom is kept wet to keep the pigs cooler. My brother in law at one point was going to install netting to keep the flies and mosquitos out.I plan on checking on ventalation, the type here in Canada is tunnel, cost alot of money, was thinking of using some sort of industrial fans, they move alot of air,Air in and air out,you can use plastic for running duct work.
Good luck Farming                                             mikey

Hi mikey what about using this bio gas? for power I have been giving it so thought..You are lucky not many people around your farm.I would be willing to give it a try on a small scale, and again there would be less of a threat for outside desieses .

Okay,Mr Nemo says cannot be from mosquitos, well this is what I was told ,piglets died from mosquitos, vets did give injections, still lost some,I will have too look into this.maybe they ate them hehehe. The bio gas sounds real good, energy savings is a real plus, solar was another one I was thinking about.Solar may be good for lighting, not enough for venting,I was thinking about exhaust fans, you turn them around so they suck in from the outside, blow inside, they blow quite alot of air around,I am lucky my wifes family own the lands around the different barns, hogs, goats, cattle and turkeys.I guess I am making my share of stink, not good for the enviroment tho,we use all the manure for our crops.Good Farming   mikey

Sir mikey, it is not impossible that a mosquito could kill a pig but it would take a swarm/ a hell lot of it just to kill a piglet. BUt to tobe honest most of i heard and see is that death is due to secondary bacterial infection.

Putting a net is a good device specially if you a near to a stagnant water.

Mr. Hog may handle there is nemovet.

Mr Nemo, that makes more sense, secondary infection,I think they thought it must have been from the mosquitoes.I know that they build fires around the barn for the smoke to help keep the bugs away, not sure if it is for the livestock or the people. Thanks alot                        mikey

Hi Doc,
Is there any effect caused by smoke to pregnant sow or gilt if we burn dried leaves to drive mosquitos away in the barn ? of course except choking your pig.

Nick

Non i know, unless your pig has allergic rhinitis.

If they cough a lot then it is not advisable to burn to drive away mosquito.
