Cross breeding a F1 x duroc= usually fattener or slaughter hogs.

If your boar is pure duroc= piglet should be atleast 50% colored,

F1= result of breeding of two different breeds of pig ex. largewhite x landrace, largewhite x duroc etc.

F1 sow = usually landrace x largewhite. You can buy Grand parent stock or parent stock sow and boar from reputable company. Cost would range from 20-60t

boar= usually duroc or pietrain.

NOte:  The most important part of breeding is not the breed itself but the performance of the animal. Always ask for performance record of every sow you bought.

You could try this link within this forum mga name ng farms ito. Although medyo di ko na siya nauupdate dahil sa sobrang  busy ko sa work ngayon.

Hi Doc,
If an F1 Sow (50% LR x 50% LW) is cross to pure LW it will give you
75% LR x 25% LR ? Do we call this an upgraded F1? And if you cross again
this to another pure LW it will give you 100% pure LW? When do we call Sow Line?
Thanks. Nick

F1( 50%lw x 50%lr) x lw= 75%LW x Lr 25%

It is called backcross

Backcross=the progeny(F1) is mated to one of the original breeds.

If you cross it again to LW it will not be pure LW. Still there is a percent LR.

Predominantly the sow line would be LW because of the percentage of LW.

Doc,

This backcross breed (75%LW x 25%LR) if cross to a Duroc will give better
quality of slaughter pig or not? Or it is better to breed with Duroc?
Thanks.

Rather than  to use the backcross. Use your F1(LwxLR), breed it with the duroc. The piglet produce is a good slaughter pig.

just a reminder, individual breed like landrace/ largewhite/ duroc still have an individual performance, so always collect the data and choose the best animal in the batch.

Hi Doc,

I have now the following herd:
2-F1 gilts, 1- landrace gilt and 1-largewhite boar. They all came from
Holiday Hills Farm. I idea is to produce my own F1 basing on the breeding
criteria as explained ( LR x LW). My plan now is to cross my 2-F1 with my largewhite
boar coz I dont have a Duroc Boar yet. Is this breeding also  good for
slaughter pig? or better I will avail an  AI of Duroc to produce my slaughter
pigs? Thanks

It is always the recommendation to get your F1 from reputable farms rather than creating your own.

But it  doesn't mean that it is prohibited to create your own F1. Advantage of having F1 from reputable farms is that they are already tested while your own F1 might be not that good as theirs but it is also a possibility that your F1 could be better than theirs.

I have seen some backyards who have a better F1 than farms.

If you have the boar use it. It is from a reputable company so it will produce a good piglet.
