Hi Doc. I'm confuse which method to apply on true heat gilt.
Some said that the natural way by using the boar is the best method
for the gilt( kasi first time manganak) while books and training tells either way
of both Artificial Insemination (A1) or using boar. On your personal experience
what is the best method Doc?
Thanks,
Nick

They have both Cons and Pro's

AI- less chance of the sow getting hurt/pilay. Conception rate is  lower compared to natural.

Natural- higher conception rate but higher risk of physical injury.

In the past years the primary use of AI is to improve the genetics.

In your case, you have a quality boar then better use it.

A.I. is okay for those who don't have a boar or doesn't want to maintain a boar.

Hi Doc,
Naitanong ko lang po itong question kasi my boar just recovered from swine dysentery as per my post here last May 2,2008 under the topic "Pamamaga ng paa". Remember you advise me not to use the boar because it might infect the gilt? How long are we going to wait for the recovery of the boar from swine dysentery before it can do service? The boar is fast recovering now and 2 F1 are to be breed next week ( May 20 and 23). If we can't use it, then we have to use AI unless we can find another boar to breed. My problem with AI
today is that I can't find an AI center in Cavite area, we have to go to Batangas or Laguna.
Thanks,
Nick

Atleast a month siguro before you use your boar.

Try to ask your feed dealer if he/she know a AI center near your place.

For sure there is an AI center along your province it's just a matter of finding them na lang.

Semen quality would depend upon the extender used and temperature. Assuming you are collecting semen from a senior boar every other day.

Some AI laboratory would store it in a laboratory refrigerator for only about 3-5 days.

It should be given to sow 2 times, same with natural insemination.

if semen doses were stored properly, as much as possible use them if they are 4 days old  or less.  and use them only on females that are on standing heat. In our practice here were we only buy semen doses from stud farms we can achieve as much as 90% concepcion rate and 13.5 total born but of course the genetics of your breeding animals play a very important role on this. proper feeding pre and post breeding is also important
